Eudora Welty Library | May 06, 2019 - Dec 31, 2020

There's a cool place where you can buy gently-used books for 50 cents each, and even kids' books cost one dollar for five! Guess where? The Book Sale at the Eudora Welty Library! Some books are like new. Open Monday-Thursday from 9 a.m.-6 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. (Closed for lunch from 1-2 p.m.) For more information, call 601-968-3519.

The English as a Second Language class consists of lessons and activities designed to primarily improve English conversational skills. Listening and comprehension will be achieved through an all-English immersive environment.

English language learners of various levels are welcome. Adolescents, adults, and senior adults are all welcome. Registration at the Medgar Evers Library is required. The ESL classes are held every Tuesday and Thursday at the Medgar Evers Library from 2:30-3:30 PM. Mr. James Hampton is the instructor.

Chess Club - It's your move! Want to increase your memory and concentration or practice logical thinking skills? Instruction is offered the first half hour for beginners followed by an hour of play for attendees of all levels at the Medgar Evers Library. Chess boards are provided and library materials are available for further learning. This is a recurring event and takes place on Saturdays at 2:00 PM starting September 7. Offered by the Institute of Southern Jewish Life, the Our Reading Family program build on previously established literacy skills and fosters a positive regard toward reading. This program introduces children and adults to new ways of engaging with literacy. This positive program also improve literacy skills in children and adults through reading interventions and parent resource sessions.

Fannie Lou Hamer Library | Nov 04, 2019 - Dec 01, 2019

The Fannie Lou Hamer Library, located at 3450 Albermarle Road, Jackson, MS 39213, will close at the end of the work day, Friday, November 1, 2019 to begin its renovation/makeover. The remodel is being completed by the Jackson Housing Authority and the Wishrock Group with a combination of public and private funds. Signage will be posted during the closure.

Medgar Evers Library | November 19, 2019

Part 1, 10:00 AM - The Sow Reap Feed team will be celebrating Farm City week by helping students understand how agriculture impacts their lives in an urban area. Kids will have the chance to plant seeds to take home and will be able to interact with chickens from the farm! Families are encouraged to attend.

Part 2, 3:30 PM - Teens and adults will learn how agriculture impacts their lives in an urban area and will gain understanding how agriculture has made its way into city limits. They will find out ways that they can be a part of urban agriculture and will have the chance to plant and take home their own edible plant, and will get to interact with some of the animals from the farm. Families are encouraged to attend.

While the family is gathering for Thanksgiving, it's time for National Game and Puzzle Week. Challenge family members to a tournament at the library and create fun memories! Board games, dominos, chess and puzzles will be available all week long for creative fun. There will also be coffee, cookies and punch. We'll see you there! Gobble, gobble! Turkey Day is almost here, so let's celebrate library style! Families with children ages 12 and under are invited to enjoy a Thanksgiving story, and then build their own turkey-themed bingo boards and play a few rounds of Turkey BINGO! No registration needed. (All ages)
