About Medgar Evers Library

The Medgar Evers Library, which was named for the Civil Rights activist Medgar Evers, is located in northwest Jackson. The library celebrates the Medgar Evers Homecoming each June, and a historic statue of Evers is located on the library grounds. The library also hosts the annual Juneteenth Celebration.
We have Summer Reading Programs, the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Contest, the annual Health Fair, Storytime Wednesdays and Fantastic Friday Storytimes at 10:00 AM, teen programs, and Showtime Movie Matinees every Saturday at 11:00 AM. The purpose of the Homework Club program is to provide K-4th grade students with a resource for completing daily school assignments and special projects during the academic year. Teens! Come join the Spark-O-Matic Robotics Club! This STEM education program, aligns the skills and knowledge needed to bridge the gap between secondary education and college/career success. Students develop critical thinking and collaborative problem-solving skills while utilizing real-world applications. In addition, teens are challenged to design, build, program, and operate robots to compete in a head-to-head challenge in an alliance format. Teens meet every Saturday at 10:00 AM at the Medgar Evers Library. Join today!

Come join us at the Medgar Evers Library on the second and fourth Saturday of every month for our new Teen Comic Book Club, "The Brick X Wall"! Teens will read and discuss a new graphic novel, comic book or manga title each month.

Beginner yoga classes will be held at the Medgar Evers Library every Tuesday evening starting August 20, 2019 at 5:30 PM until 6:30 PM. La'Desha Jones of Eternal Yoga is the instructor. This program is for teens and adults. Yoga mats will be provided (up to 10 mats) with water.

Patrons, come learn to speak Spanish! This Spanish language program is a course in which patrons will get exposure to basic Spanish. Through fun games and instruction, students will learn the fundamentals of reading, writing, and conversation in a friendly environment. All levels are welcome to attend.

The Spanish classes are on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:30 PM-3:30 PM. Registration is required.

The English as a Second Language class consists of lessons and activities designed to primarily improve English conversational skills. Listening and comprehension will be achieved through an all-English immersive environment.

English language learners of various levels are welcome. Adolescents, adults, and senior adults are all welcome. Registration at the Medgar Evers Library is required. The ESL classes are held every Tuesday and Thursday at the Medgar Evers Library from 2:30-3:30 PM. Mr. James Hampton is the instructor.

September 6 through December 21, the Metro Jackson Section of the National Council for Negro Women conducts the program. Girls Who Code (GWC) is a national computer coding program that has been in operation for the last seven years to train girls how to code. Registration is required to participate.

Chess Club - It's your move! Want to increase your memory and concentration or practice logical thinking skills? Instruction is offered the first half hour for beginners followed by an hour of play for attendees of all levels at the Medgar Evers Library. Chess boards are provided and library materials are available for further learning. This is a recurring event and takes place on Saturdays at 2:00 PM starting September 7. The Great American Smokeout is an annual event sponsored by the American Cancer Society (ACS). It is held on the third Thursday of November and focuses on encouraging Americans to quit tobacco smoking. This is a free event to the public and to all library patrons.

This Book Tasting program will be a wonderful way to get teens engaged in reading and familiarizing them with a wide variety of genres. Come join us for this Holiday Classic. Synopsis: One Christmas Eve a long time ago, a baby crawled into Santa's bag of toys and was raised as an elf. The baby grows into an adult three times larger than the biggest elf--and realizes that he will never truly fit in at the North Pole. This holiday season, the young man goes looking for his true place in the world--in New York City and finds his workaholic father--who's on Santa's "naughty" list, a new mother and a 10-year-old brother who doesn't believe in Santa Claus or elves.
