The Jackson-Hinds Library System's newest branch celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting and dedication at 10 am September 25,2006.
The Richard G. Bolden/Anna Bell-Moore Branch Library, 1444 Wiggins Road, is located next to the Westside Community Center. The 4,000 sq. ft.includes more room for books, a separate children’s area, computer stations and a meeting room for community activities.
The new library replaces the Whiterock Branch Library, which has been operating in a small space within the Westside Community Center since the Whiterock Apartments were closed.
The library is named for two prominent citizens from the west Jackson community, Richard G. Bolden and Anna Bell-Moore. Reverend Bolden was the long-time pastor of the New Traveler's Rest Missionary Baptist Church, located almost directly behind the new library. Ms. Moore founded the Westside Civic Club, the first chartered civic club in Jackson for African Americans, and worked to create recreational space in the community.
Mrs. Carolyn McCallum, Executive Director of the Jackson/Hinds Library System says of the new library, “I appreciate the Westside community’s patience in waiting for its new library. I am sure that this branch will be one of our finest.”
Library hours are 9am-6pm Monday through Friday and 10am-2pm Saturday. For more information call 60-.922-6076 or 601-968-5810.
