Why were these branches chosen for closing early one afternoon per week? An analysis of the number of customer visits, circulation of library materials and computer use per numbers of customers registered at each branch helped us keep the libraries open longest where the most customers were being served. Nevertheless, we hate to see any library in our system lose hours, and we will be seeking other solutions for funding. We will revisit our budget in January to see if any of these hours can be readded. If you are a patron of any of the five libraries that are closing on Wednesday afternoon, we apologize for cutting hours at your favorite library. When 65% of our budget goes to staffing, we really do not have a choice when budget funding is cut.
What can you do to see your library's hours increased? Talk to your Hinds County Board of Supervisor and ask them to search for additional funding. You can also ask your state legislators to put back the funding that was cut to the Mississippi Library Commission's budget. Their $11.1 million dollar budget was cut over a million dollars this past year, and all libraries in Mississippi are dealing with this huge cut in state funding for libraries.
If you have questions or comments about the closing, please call the administrative offices at 601-968-5825. We will be happy to talk to you personally about the hour cut. You are also welcome to give a 2 minute comment at the next library board meeting on October 25th at Welty Library Meeting Room.
